Synopsis
The Culvert Synopsis

Finding a secret passage to another time and place , brings about a string of unusual events and changes the lives of those who enter.

"What is a culvert?" Artha asked . "Shhh," whispered Mara,"It's just a big ole drain pipe and we are going in there on an adventure tonight."
Artha rubbed her nose that was tickling from fuzzy floaters in the air."I ain't going nowhere in the dark, I'm scared."
"Yes you are so coming with me Artha! You are my best friend and we got to have our adventures together."
"Mara, it is Halloween night and you know that is when all the boogie men are out. Please let's just keep on trick or treating .We can go sit in the mulberry tree and eat our candy after that."
Mara twitched her feathery antennae and crinkled up her nose,"Why do I always have to be the brave one? You know you have fun when you just do what I tell you to do."
Up ahead in the moonlight they could just make out the overgrown entrance to the old broken culvert.
Fire flys blinked off and on like fallen stars and the heavy fragrance of honeysuckle filled the air.

Artha's fragile wings trembled in the breeze that seemed to emanate from the dark mouth of the cavernous pipe. Mara felt pity and said,"Here, let's stop and eat a Tootsie Roll so's we keep our strength up for being brave." With that she stuck a claw into Artha's bucket and dug around for two pieces of candy.
They sat down on a log to the side of the culvert in the shadows of a monkey ear tree to eat their treats. The fire flys suddenly all blinked out and the moon went behind a cloud.Someone whispered,"Who are you ?"

"We are the Time , we are the place, we are the reason ,the rhyme and the race." answered Mara without hesitation.
"Well alright then!" said the voice and became a visible form that gradually proved to be a unicorn.
Artha would have screamed but for Mara's hand over her mouth.

"Climb on my back and I will take you where you must go." said the unicorn.
Artha tried to run away but Mara grabbed her shoulders and said,
"Get on the pony or I am going to tell your Mother about the cigarettes!"
Artha began to sob but she grabbed hold of the long white mane and began to climb onto the creature's back.
Mara tore off her own Halloween costume and joined her.
"My name is Sugar" the animal told them ,"Now hold on tight."
Mara's heart beat wildly and the blood pounded in her head as they took off. There was no time to think about what was happening to them as the rushing wind blew back their hair and stole their breath away.

The culvert was long and dark and sounds were magnified and terrifying . Artha buried her face in Mara's blouse and shivered in fear. Mara however laughed out loud at the exhilarating ride.
Was this true, she wondered or was she dreaming? The pounding hooves, Artha's warm body at her back, the silky mane in her hands, all were very real.Far ahead in the darkness she could see a pinpoint of light which began to grow larger and larger.
Somehow in her heart of hearts , she knew she was riding to her destiny.
