In the Cave

Synopsis
In the Cave Synopsis

A boy named Stephan is stuck in a cave. He doesnt know how long he's been there, or exactly how he got there. But as time goes on, he slowly starts to remember how he got there, who was with him, who put him there, and why.

My name is Stephan. I am very cold. I found this notebook here on the floor, in my cave. I guess this is my cave now. There is no way for anyone to get in, and no way for me to get out, so I guess it's mine. I don't care. I don't want it. I fell in about a day ago. Or maybe a week, or an hour, I can't keep track of time anymore. I barely remeber life outside the cave, my cave, so it must have been awhile ago that I fell, or was I pushed? Someone had been with me. I don't know. Maybe I dreamed that. It's so dark in here. It's always dark. Then even darker sometimes. When it rains only the far corner to my left, or maybe it could be my right, gets wet, it floods. I drink it. It tastes good. In the farthest corner from that, I do my business. Funny how I can be all alone in a cave, writing in a journal and still have to say "business". I sleep in the corner where the wall is curved and I use the last corner to sit, as I am now. I am very lonely. I miss my friends. I think I had friends. I dream about them sometimes. I wish I could talk to them. Why can't I just die? Is it fair for me to have to keep living? I won't kill myself. I'll survive untill it's my time to go. I know I will. I can do it. It sure is lonely.
One of their names was James.

I can hear noises around me.Somewhere there is a soft rustling
When I hear it I begin to sing.It is good to hear a voice even if it is only mine.

I am so hungry.I search my pockets for anything to eat.In the thin shaft of light where I write in my notebook,I lay out everything I found. There is a pocket knife, half a candy bar,my wallet and a stub from a movie ticket.I quickly devour the candy bar and then lie down in the tiny ray of light. It is my only connection to the world outside.

That very night, I had a dream. It was bright everywhere, I think I was in the outside world, out of my cave. There were voices, they sounded so familiar. I tried to look at who was speaking, but all I could see was blurry faces. I called out to them, but they did not appear to hear me. Then I was falling. I awoke, dripping with sweat on the floor of my cave. My stomach was growling.

I began to feel around the perimeter of the cave.I had an idea and sure enough ,near the place where the rain water seeped in,I found mushrooms growing.I was so excited I cried out for joy.The echo reverberated around me like the voice of a friend.I picked a handful and looked at them in the shaft of light. They were plump and beautiful.Mushrooms weren't a favorite of mine but I was desperate.I gobbled down two bunches with some water.I felt like I had found a T bone steak. At least I wasn't going to starve anytime soon.

But that fact only loosened the knot in my stomach a little. Sure, I'm not going to starve, for a bit anyway, but how long would I be down here? How long until I would be rescued, if rescue was even coming. I wondered for a second if anyone outside missed me, if I even had someone to miss.

I just went looking through my wallet. I had thrown it aside when I was looking for food, and just stumbled across it a little bit ago while I was looking for more mushrooms. Apparently, my name is Stephan Goldman. I was born August 30th 1985,I'm 5'10, and by the looks of the picture on my drivers license I have dark brown hair, brown eyes and I'm pretty pale. There was nothing else in my wallet, only my license. Oh, and a quarter and two pennies. I wonder why I don't have money.

Lying in the dark I tried to focus on the one name I could recall,James.Who was he?Did he push me down here?Flashes of strange images came and went through my mind. Why couldn't I remember my life before this lonely prison?Frustrated I got up and went to the thin shaft of light.Perhaps I could climb toward it.I tried to get a foothold on the crumbling rock and fell hard to the cold floor.

I stumbled back to my feet and looked back at the wall, searching for a better way up. After a few more failed attempts, I sat down directly under the light, so it shone on me. I tried to think, to remember, anything. I was desperate. But nothing came to me. Frustrated, I got up and started to pace. As I walked back and forth, I felt something funny on the bottom of my foot, inside my sneaker. Sitting down, I hastily took it off and found a folded up peice of paper, a photograph. I saw my own face smiling up at me, and my arm was around another man's shoulder, a man who, until this moment, I hadnt remembered. But now, as I stared down at his face, I felt an unexplainable burning hatred for him.
"James." I whispered.

That night I dreamed of a fantastic garden where plants grew and blossomed into human beings. The sun was gentle on my face and the wind felt like a lover's kiss.I lay down beside a bubbling spring to take a drink and my reflection was that of a Prince wearing a golden crown. Just beyond the garden ,colored flags waved on the balustrades of a shining castle. I started towards it but my feet had taken root in the rich soil of the garden and I could not budge.I woke up to the darkness wondering what it all could mean.Perhaps I was kidnapped by James and being held down here for ransom.

Just after the first ray of sunlight found me down in the darkness ,I heard a new sound. I strained to listen and sure enough,it came again .Very faintly, someone was calling my name.
"Stephen,Stephen, where are you? You can come out now.I found you," a girl's voice called.
I jumped up screaming,"Help me,Help me! I'm trapped down here in some kind of cave."

A loud scraping sound followed and large clumps of dirt came falling down on my head .I coughed and shook it off to see a trap door being tugged out of place above me. In another moment a young girl's face appeared in the blinding light."Stephen!she cried Get up here right now!Are you crazy? You look terrible."

I was too weak to protest or even move so she ran off to get help .I was left confused but elated to be rescued from this Hellish prison.I sat and stared up at the heavenly square of light until I heard the girl screaming in the distance.
