Blaze from Rainne's Point of View...

Synopsis
Blaze Synopsis

The story Blaze is the first of it's kind. It is a story that will be told from the perceptive of four characters. It is the first Point of View style story on StoryPassers.com. This new concept is being tested out with this first story, and soon the new feature will be open to everyone. So jump in today, and add to Blaze, and try writing the same story from different points of view.

The fire started in the kitchen, a pan of grease burned for too long, and flames erupted, and then spilled over onto the counter. The paper towels went up quick. The oven-mitt fought hard, but suffered the same fate as the paper towels. Soon the kitchen was orange. Gypsy, a fluffy white lazy cat, bolted like kitten to the window, and leaped out onto the fire escape. The fire engine sirens howled as they neared. The apartment was about to be swallowed whole, in a fiery gulp.

Yes,the fire started in the kitchen but it had help. The pan of grease was filled to overflowing and left to burn on purpose. The arsonist took pity on the cat and put her out on the fire escape. The perpetrator then watched from the alley as fire engulfed the apartment.

I came home to find a husky unkempt detective named Smith stomping around in the debris. My first thought was for my cat Moonbeam.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Wed, Apr 22 2009 03:52:00 EST

Moonbeam was gone. She must have escaped somehow or was taken. What wasn't destroyed by fire was ruined by water.Only my strongbox could have survived this inferno.I went straight to what had been my hall closet to find it.There was no sign of it.

Detective Smith acted as though I was an intruder in my own home.

"Hold up there,"he ordered,"This is a crime scene.Everything has to stay just as it is until the investigation is finished."

I shoved past the big slob and looked out at the fire escape.
"At least Moonbeam found a way out ."I mused.

"Who or what is Moonbeam?"he asked

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Wed, May 13 2009 01:16:52 EST

Ignoring the question,I asked one of my own,"Have you seen my strongbox? It was in that closet and has all my important papers in it plus a few valuables."

The big lug rubbed the stubble on his chin and grunted.

"Aint seen nothing like that lady. Can I see some identification?"

I almost lost it but I remained calm.I promised myself a breakdown later.I fumbled in my bag for my driver's license and handed it to him.He scribbled something in a notebook and handed it back.

"Do you live here alone?" he asked.

"Yes,except for my cat Moonbeam."I answered .

"I have a lot of questions for you."he told me gruffly.
"There's a coffee shop around the corner or you can come downtown.Which do you prefer?"

My mind was racing. How did this happen? Where would I stay?
What about Moonbeam? There was nothing left of my belongings.
I needed to sit down and think about what to do next.Suddenly the idea of the coffee shop seemed appealing even if it was with Sluggo the detective.

"I'll take the coffee shop."I answered weakly.I felt my knees shaking. It had been a bad year for me.Sluggo noticed and took my arm not unkindly.

"Come on,"he ordered,"Let's get out of here.I'll send some men out to search for your cat. They will be canvassing the area anyway."

I admit I leaned on him as we made it the two blocks to the little cafe.He was strong and solid and smelled of peppermint and cigars.I kind of liked that combination. It reminded me of my father.

He pushed open the door of the restaurant and guided me to a booth in the back as if we had been there a dozen times before.I slumped down on the seat and felt as if I was eighty years old.He scooted in across from me with difficulty due to his paunch.

I glanced up to see a look of real concern on his once handsome face.I guess I looked as bad as I felt. When the waitress came, she hit him with the towel she had been using to wipe tables.

"Hey Danny,Where you been?I didn't think you could live so long without Pop's Roast Beef Surprise,"she laughed.

"Yeah well,Gimme two of them and a couple cups of coffee will ya?"

I protested but they insisted and I was too fried to argue.
Soon we were gobbling down luscious roast beef and gravy over home made mashed potatoes.I didn't realize how hungry I was.Sluggo wouldn't let me talk about the fire until we finished off a slice of apple pie ala mode. Then over our coffee he said.

"When was the last time you ate woman?I thought you were going to faint flat out."

I had to laugh because he was right.I had been working so hard ,I had forgotten to eat.

"Thanks for dinner,Detective.I was feeling pretty low but finding my whole life gone up in smoke was quite a shock."

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Fri, May 15 2009 02:46:17 EST

Just when I was thinking Sluggo was okay,he threw me a curve ball.He had the gall to accuse me of setting my own place on fire. Why I've never been so insulted in my life.I started to leave but he begged me to stay and he was so pathetic I sat back down.He whined about losing his job or some such nonsense.Anyway it didn't matter because five minutes later a cop showed up with my sweet Moonbeam.I ran outside and took her in my arms. She was filthy, covered in soot and mud from one end to the other.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Mon, May 25 2009 03:25:41 EST

I was thrilled.I hugged her close and she began to purr poor baby. She must have been so scared.Detective Smith got in the squad car with us and after a little misunderstanding, took us to visit his sister Debbie. She was a doll. She has a beautiful place and her cats were very friendly.

She told me Daniel was the Black Sheep of the family and was always screwing up at work. She said he was just as bad with any kind of relationship.Just as I thought,he was a loser.Well at least I had a free place to stay until the insurance adjuster could do his work.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Mon, May 25 2009 19:49:55 EST

I still had not told Sluggo about what was in my strongbox.I knew he needed that information so I called him up.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Fri, May 29 2009 03:19:58 EST

Detective Smith came back to see me after he finished his duties at the jail. His sister left us in the sitting room with all the cats and two slices of pound cake.We weren't hungry but the cats were.

"Come with me,"he said, and guided me out to the back porch.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Sat, May 30 2009 03:03:30 EST

I tried to imagine him as a younger man.Under that fat and stubble of beard was a handsome guy. There was something special about him.Something that made me think he had missed his calling in life and settled for this depressing line of work out of necessity.

He looked at the porch swing and I could see the calculations going on in his head.In the end,he sat down gingerly and motioned for me to join him.

The porch overlooked a large lake and the sunset on the water was lovely. He sighed and I felt him relax. We were both silent as the sun dipped below the horizon.
The sky, streaked like ribbon candy, was breathtaking.

"Detective,"I began,"I want to thank you for your kindness.
Your sister and brother in law are wonderful."

Down by the dock ,a light came on in the little pavilion and Sluggo turned to me and said,
"Hey,you want to walk down there and sit by the water?"

I said yes and we started down to the water's edge when a shot rang out and a bullet whizzed by my head.
Danny slammed into me and knocked me down.We rolled over and over down the bank and landed with a splash in the water.Another bullet struck a tree trunk right where I had been standing and I couldn't help but scream.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Sat, May 30 2009 20:50:57 EST

Danny ran after the gunman and I ran for the house.I was terrified.Debbie sat with her arm around me while the cops searched for the man.Moonbeam came to comfort me and Debbie was speaking quietly telling me everything would be alright. She started to turn off the TV she had been watching when I grabbed the remote out of her hand.

"No,"I cried,"rewind that .I think I know those people."There on the screen was a picture of the young couple I had been showing houses to earlier. She turned up the volume to hear,

The young couple, was found shot to death this morning ....
I think I fainted then because the next thing I remember,Debbie was passing smelling salts under my nose and calling my name. When I had recovered sufficiently ,
she asked me what happened but I just asked if she had some dry clothes I could borrow.I had to talk to Danny.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Fri, Jun 05 2009 01:48:07 EST

When Danny came back ,Debbie brought us coffee and left us to talk.Danny's pants were wet from the knees down from rolling down the hill into the water. He didn't care.He just wanted that cup of hot, sweet java.He was a mess but he looked good to me.Any guy looks good after they save your life.

"Thank you,"I said,"I would have been killed if it wasn't for you."I put my cold hand on his big meaty fist and squeezed.
"You're a great cop in my book,"I told him.

Believe it or not,he blushed under that five o'clock shadow and that made me smile in spite of everything.

"All in a day's work ,"he responded but he did not pull his hand away.In fact he put down his cup and put the other hand over mine.

"Listen,"he said,"I know it's tough but I need to hear your whole story."

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Fri, Jun 05 2009 02:18:05 EST

After I told him about the young couple he said,

"Grab your coat, you're coming with me.We need help with this thing. It's getting out of hand."

I made sure Debbie would feed Moonbeam and then we left for the station. On the way I explained that the young couple had asked me to hold a packet of papers for them,I just assumed it was financial information so I agreed.I put them in my strongbox and forgot about them until the fire.

"Whatever was in that packet just got those kids killed,"Smith mused."Are you sure you don't know what it was?"

I did know but I wasn't ready to share that information yet.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Sat, Jun 06 2009 00:33:09 EST

Thad and Linda Hanson were blackmailing Linda's uncle, Jeffrey Taylor , a respected builder who had gained many city contracts.Linda had worked as Jeff's private secretary all through college. He confided in her as a trusted family member. She had the lowdown on all his shady deals and they went right to the top.

The packet of papers was innocuous to the average eye as it was just facts and figures but in the right hands it could be disastrous.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Mon, Jun 15 2009 12:17:58 EST

Realizing what I had been entrusted with,I exchanged the papers for some real estate files and put the packet in my safe.I took the incriminating information to work with me and did some in depth research.I had intended to replace the papers after making a copy but the firebug got there first. At this moment, the sheaf of papers was rolled up and stuffed down in my oversized handbag. Now I wasn't sure how to explain my duplicity to Detective Smith.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Mon, Jun 15 2009 12:29:00 EST

Danny was starting to get to me.I had been on my own so long I had built up a tough skin to survive. My parents died when I was young and I married my child hood sweetheart. When he died in a car crash I withdrew into my shell and avoided any real relationships. Now for the first time in years,I felt myself caring about what someone else thought of me.

"Whatever was in that packet just got those kids killed,"Smith mused."Are you sure you don't know what it was?"

"Alright,I was just waiting to be sure I could trust you,"I lied. The information I have incriminates a lot of people, even some in law enforcement."

Danny pulled over and parked the car.
"Give me the package now,"he ordered coldly.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Tue, Jun 16 2009 20:12:07 EST

I reached out and touched his hand,
"Listen Danny,"I said,"You have to be careful.Your boss is involved in the cover up of some really shady deals. If he finds out you have seen this..."

"Thanks for the concern,"he muttered,"The guy already has it in for me.This is the first real case I've had in months.I'll be careful but you have to give me the file right now.You should have given it to me to start with and maybe those kids would be alive ."

Fighting back guilty tears,I handed him the package.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Wed, Jul 08 2009 01:35:02 EST

I knew he wouldn't understand the information in the files so I suggested,
"Do you want me to explain those papers to you Honey?"

He looked at me askance at the use of the endearment but I could tell he liked it.There was a big heart under that gruff exterior. He just nodded and handed the package back to me.We spent the next fifteen minutes discussing the contents.

"Okay,"he finally sighed,"We better get going.I'm going to keep this on the down low for a few more hours. Will you be alright with that?"

"Sure Baby,"I smiled,"I think you should keep it on the 'Down Low' forever.Just put it in the mail back to Mister Jeffrey Taylor and forget it."

"He wouldn't forget it Rainne. He knows you know. You are in a lot of trouble Sweetheart."

I turned to him and said,
"You'll protect me ,won't you Honey?"and then I leaned over and kissed him on the lips.

He was surprised but he kissed me back.It was really sweet.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Thu, Jul 09 2009 12:53:12 EST

I had never been so exhausted in my whole life but Danny's kiss was exhilarating .When we got to the station everything was in a turmoil and I soon found myself sitting in an awful room with a bunch of strangers. It was pretty darn scary if you ask me.Two of them were covered in blood.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Sun, Jul 19 2009 16:04:14 EST

I soon found out who the others were but I didn't understand what Danny was trying to figure out.He had the files that incriminated the man behind the whole thing.I just wondered what he was going to do with it.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Mon, Jul 27 2009 18:04:50 EST

I kind of zoned out while Danny questioned the others. It wasn't long before he signaled that it was time to go.We dropped off the poor couple who had been carjacked and then headed back to Debbie's house. All I could think about was getting a shower and falling into bed.I was so tired I couldn't even worry anymore.Danny was coming on to me all the way home but I don't even remember the conversation.I kept thinking about my sweet Moonbeam.

I noticed a patrol car outside the house and knew he had ordered an overnight watch on the place. He was a smart guy and I had to admit he was growing on me.Inside, the house was quiet and Danny pulled me into an embrace and kissed me.It was sweet but I could barely keep my eyes open.

"I'll stay here and catch a few winks so I can keep an eye on you,"he whispered so as not to wake the family. It wasn't necessary because Debbie and Moonbeam came out to see what was going on.

Debbie saw us holding each other and smiled .I could tell she was just waiting for her baby brother to find someone.

"I'm gonna crash on the couch for a couple of hours,"Danny told her as he let me go.A red blush was visible even in the early light.

"You go get a shower and I'll get you some old sweats to sleep in while I wash your clothes,"she told him,"You smell like old stew."

We both laughed and as I followed her down the hall to the other bathroom,I turned and blew him a kiss.In twenty minutes I was snuggled into a downy comforter with Moonbeam by my side.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Sat, Aug 01 2009 02:10:48 EST

The next morning I had an appointment with the insurance adjuster but Danny insisted that the man come to Debbie's house for safety reasons. That's when it hit me that I really had nothing left.I was a homeless widowed orphan with about seventy five bucks in the bank and some big shots out to kill me.Suddenly I missed Danny.I heard Debbie open the door to the insurance man and then I heard he scream.Running into the front room I was shocked to see her lying unconscious on the floor.A short stocky man with a gun and a brief case grabbed me by the arm and growled,

"We're getting out of here, see?Don't do anything stupid and you can live a little longer. When the cops outside ask where you are going, tell them a detective is meeting us at the crime scene."

I was trembling but I nodded my agreement as he guided me out the door.Smiling broadly, the man walked with me to the police car."We're going now officer, here's my home office number if you want to call first to verify my identity."

The cop shoved the card in his pocket and waved us on.We got into a car with a magnetic sign that read,
Integrated Insurance Co. and sped off down the boulevard. My mind was buzzing with a thousand ideas.I was not one to take it lying down so I had to come up with something fast.

Groaning loudly,I pretended to faint and fell over against the hoodlum ,catching him by surprise. He lost control of the wheel and the car began to careen wildly across the highway toward a deep ditch.

The last thing I remembered was the sound of water rushing and then silence.

I woke up lying on the ground with a truck driver deciding whether or not I needed CPR.I coughed and tried to sit up but the dude held me down. "Just take it easy Sister," he said,"An ambulance will be here in a minute to get you.I called 911,".

I opened my eyes to see a rough looking angel with a double chin named Danny. I was never so glad to see anyone in my whole life. He was holding my hand and there were tears in his eyes. When he saw my eyelids flutter he tried to hug me but the big ole nurse almost put a whammy on him so he stopped trying."Oh baby," he gushed,"Are you alright? How do you feel?"
I wanted to say that I felt like crud but I had wires and tubes that kept me pretty quiet.

celeritas (Rate Passer) added to this story on Wed, Sep 01 2010 02:22:29 EST

I had been wandering in and out of the light unsure if I really wanted to pass. This time I had to be sure. "You've been in and out for the past few hours." Danny explained, "you still need to rest."

What else could I do? All the tubes and wires practically bound me to the bed.
